Storage Woes and Almost Catastrophes

Post by cmdr_nova »

Today I discovered something new about Linux, or maybe just Pop!_OS itself, since that’s nearly the only distro I’ve used, besides Debian (on a repurposed Dell). And, let me tell you, this wouldn’t be even half the problem it became for an hour while I was munching on my lunch, if games weren’t so freakin large in 2025. Yeah, I was attempting to install Where Winds Meet, while simultaneously downloading some packages for project development.

I was watching Danny Gonzalez on Youtube talk about his experience with the cybertruck, and using terminal while also toggling a new game on Steam. First, Vivaldi closed itself and wouldn’t re-open. Then the terminal gave the weirdest feedback I’ve ever seen, and everything stopped functioning.

I had to use the magic keyboard shortcuts to pop myself into full terminal mode, and then reboot.

But, once I got past my disc encryption, there was nothing! Just a blank screen.

I guess the display manager … can’t load, not even the login screen, when you’ve got zero space on your hdd? That’s new.

The fix wasn’t immediately apparent, but once I figured it out, I booted into terminal, deleted all the packages I had downloaded, and was finally able to get back into my PC the normal way.

Noted: Keep a close eye on storage space!

But … man! I really wish dev studios would find a way to minimize the massive amounts of data they’re pushing in their games nowadays. 98 gigs for Where Winds Meet, a brand new MMO that’s, apparently, really popular. Also, 120 gigs for Diablo 4, 80 gigs to have Genshin Impact on your PC instead of your phone, 80 gigs to keep Cyberpunk 2077 on your hdd, because you’re definitely coming back to it sometime soon, 100+ gigs for World of Wacraft + Classic + the Midnight beta, and 120 some-odd gigs for the remastered Oblivion, that you definitely want to keep. Because it’s awesome.

I need another hard-drive.

So! I’ve been writing for a long time. This blog isn’t the first place I’ve written things. I have backups and imports from blogs I’ve kept since 20 … 13? I think? And my time writing online spans across, mostly Wordpress blogs. But none of them have ever had ads or banner ads. If I make any money, it’s from subscriptions.

If you like what I do, and want to kick a few bucks my way, and maybe put some cash in my hand for another hard-drive, you can subscribe on my subscription page via Stripe, or on my Liberapay.

Thanks for reading.
