On Moderation Lists and the Fediverse

Post by cmdr_nova »

For the longest time, I’ve been wanting a way to subscribe to my moderation list from Bluesky, on my bridged accounts that I actually post from, on the Fediverse. This is important, because, aside from the on-going enshitification of Bluesky, there are a lot of bad-faith actors on Bluesky, along with many, many trolls, jerks, and nard-heads. Making sure that they can’t interact with me over the bridge is extremely important, and now, you can finally do that!

As of six days ago, the brid.gy service that connects Fediverse users with Bluesky, and vice versa, finally introduced a feature that easily allows you to subscribe to block/moderation lists from Bluesky, if you happen to be on the Fediverse.

I won’t be sharing a link to my moderation list, because it’s more a private list for me to keep track of people I’ve blocked more easily, and to block them across multiple accounts. Since it’s a catch-all sort of deal, it has anything ranging from assholes who did me wrong, to nazis, and government accounts. Obviously, this isn’t something that every person would want to subscribe to, because maybe one of the assholes who caused me distress isn’t somebody you want to block. I don’t know!

There is one issue, though. This doesn’t technically work correctly with non-Mastodon accounts. This is an issue that keeps cropping up whenever people develop new things that work with the Fediverse (I’m guilty of this with my Discover Fedi app lol), in that, those features mainly only work with Mastodon, and then when it comes to the alternatives, like Misskey, Akkoma, and so on and so forth, you have to come up with workarounds.

This is no different.

In order to properly subscribe to a blocklist, you’ll want to use the method they’ve explained, i.e., in sending a DM that says “block https://link.to.the.list,” but in regard to doing so on Akkoma … and this is kind of funny to me, you’ll have to find a DM that the brid.gy account has already sent to you (such as when you originally followed in order to bridge your account), and then reply to it with the aforementioned method for blocklist subscription.

And it works!

Hurray!

Now Jesse Singal won’t be able to see your Fediverse posts. Congratulations.
